The consensus of the secular establishment is that one is not in the right frame of mind when the think they want to kill themselves anymore than a murderer who wants to murder someone else. The only difference is the direction of that person's projection of the dysfunction from another to oneself. This view is from the preponderance of evidence which shows that when treated for biological, chemical, hormonal, or other dysfunctions within or around the person the vast majority of those people go on to lead happy productive lives without the desire to commit suicide any longer and glad that some one talked them off the ledge. Civilized culture as a pattern and time proven rule builds, creates and nurtures life. Although it has within it, radicles like in any healthy biological body, which if unchecked destroy, mutate and seek death, these are the exception ,however; and not the rule. Barbarity, anarchist, and the like of chaos theories or fatalistic tendencies as a rule, destroys, and kills without noticeable creation, and or helping of life. If part of a civilizec culture or body is malignant then it is civilized to kill it or let it be killed to save the culture or body, just as we would with any cancer or disease of that nature. If however it is benign or an attack, like and heart attack ir anxiety attack we treat this symptom and do not let the body die if possible since once the hear is healed many more happy years are possible. Likewise, the person that wants to commit suicide generally has a sick "heart" that needs healing and then they will be fine.

I am somewhat cynical on this issue. My 1st reaction is - OK I'll check back later. Just try not to leave too big a mess......
It isn't illegal to commit suicide; what are they going to do to you once you are dead??? The attempt though is illegal. Most suicides are due to mental problems that could probably be solved in a much better way. The attempts are most often last ditch calls for help becuase the person knows not what else to do. It ties up resources, disturns other peoples lives. The aftermath, if the attempt is carried out, successful or not, causes a lot of problems for all kinds of folks - family, emergency services, witnesses, society in general; everyone involved.
Now, when it comes to euthanasia, I have no problems with this whatsoever. Someone with an incurable, progressive, terminal disease wants to die with dignity, more power to them I say. These folks generally choose a peaceful, clean, nonviolent, painless way to go. I know religious folks don't like it, but medicine has progressed to the point that they can keep you "alive" all drugged up or in excruciating pain for a very long time before you finally succumb to what they knew was going to kill you in the end anyway.

It is common sense. To make it legal to commit suicide would give some an easy out of a lifetime of promise and hope. I would reason to say that 95% if not more have contemplated suicide once in their lives. To some only the fact of it being against the law and punishable is the thing that keeps them breathing. To attempt suicide is to attempt murder upon oneself with premeditation. That is a crime. However in most cases where a person has been prosecuted for it would be when they harm others in the attempt. Otherwise they are directed to undergo therapy.

It is against the law?
It may be against the law if a person attempting to commit suicide creates a panic. Or if the person brings harm to another person or property.
It is just a really dumb thing to do.

Committing suicide is a crime because it is the killing of oneself. Thus, anybody who assist a person in committing a suicide is punishable as an accomplice under the Criminal Law.

Like in ancient Rome?
If it IS against our law (which I doubt, but if it is), maybe because it is costing the state money to in police overtime to clean up the mess.
Maybe your gun wasn't registered.
Maybe you used an illegal switchblade.
Is that secular enough?
