The 'nagmani' or 'snake's gem' is a myth prevalent in rural India - that when a pebble or stone accidentally gets into a king cobra's mouth and pierces its way into one of its poison glands, the snake's poison forms a thick layer around the stone and solidifies as a protective coat to prevent the stone from further damaging the snake's mouth. [The myth must have been based on how a pearl is formed within an oyster !]
This 'stone' was rated as having a rare gem-like quality - with allegedly miraculous healing powers. It was also supposed to bring good luck to those who owned, or wore them !
...Several Indian folk tales, from various regions, relate how brave young men [usually princes] went in search of the snake-gems - and returned with a beautiful princess as well, for a 'bonus'.
...But no such 'gems' are formed in reality - though even now there are con-men [and women !] who sell such fakes to simpletons, who are still willing to believe in these tall tales !

I too used to believe this to be a myth.

I have heard about nagmani from a group of relatives, and I believe them. According to all of them, they have seen it, not once but many a times. This happened last year when they were camping out in gujarat. A local reported having seen a snake with a glowing gem by its side. The gem glowed blue-green. So they went to check it out - and here's what they saw...........
In not very thick bushes, there was a glowing light coming from a egg sized stone and around it, coiled, was a king cobra. Disturbed by their torch-lights it quickly crawled towards them so they had to back-off. They decided to stay for one more night and see it again, after the boy convinced that it will be there for a few more days. They saw it on the next night again. This time the snake remained calm as they didn't throw torch-light at it. The group says the animal was way bigger than it normally should be and suspect that it was using the glowing thing to attract it's prey.

I do believe them for the reason they are 35+ and have never know to lie in their life.

you may or may not believe this, or atleast untill you see it on Discovery channel.

its an utter most superstitious belief prevailing among the innocent folks, because ignorance is something , believing whatever our ancestors told us, but when we are educated and smart enough to think about the reality, we are enlightened and we should come out of such ignorance, because, a cobra is also like any other snake, compared to African Mamba snake it is only less poisonous, so if we consider this , Mamba also must be having a huge MANI isn t it. ha! ha!. come on guys wake up.
