One feature was certainly that there was no understanding of the radioactively generated heat in the Earth's core, and of the result that it forced the mantle to convect. This is what actually provides the immense lateral force to cause continental drift, but in 1912 neither Wegener nor anybody else had the slightest idea how such a force might have been generated, so his theory had no credibility.

How can Wegener be unaware of the continental drift when he first proposed that continents moved around? Have you worded this question wrongly?
