A nice question. "The West and the American dream" still haunts the European minds, but it is not as long a real, vivid dream that used to be, it became too practical and definitely limited to the economical aspect and better opportunities for a career ( I am not sharing those views). Actually you say "for some Europeans" and you are right. Now the "trend", immigrate to USA is mostly developing as a dream to the Eastern European countries and it is so easy to be self-explained why. The economical decline could be seen not only in Europe, it is valid also to the USA ( maybe the aspects are different). La vitta in Italia non e un sogno, pero la e piu bello ..
Take care.
Have a great time!

If i may correct you, since i m greek and i ve heard many stories of migration to the states, germany, australia, for most immigrants the dream was not america itself. it was working hard there (or elsewhere) for some years and come back eventually with a capital having a change in the own country. ofcourse things never quite flow that way. first one works, then he opens somekind of business, then he gets married and next thing he knows the kids are going to school there and dont want to leave anyway. besides after 10 or 15 years abroad one realises that he is allienating from his old country. There are people ofcourse who wanted to go there and stay there from the beginning but that was not the majority.
Anyway it was a different era, different financial and political situation. Nowadays people dont "dream" of the states, at least not massively. Maybe in developing countries, i dont know, but definetely not in the EU. If Europeans dream of going away today, the most massive dream i think is Cuba or Brazil or something like that. But only for six months a year ;-)

i don't think so
i'm italian, and i like on holiday in USA only
i can't renounce to have the welfare state, free education and free health system, more equalities among social classes, and a great respect for human rights (for example the lack of penalty death), better food, and a stronger currency as €
wow, you are an expert of italian music!

I know it is the dream of Mexicans - they know that they can get free healthcare here.
The freedom of America is probably the dream of ppl who live in a society that doesn't have many/any freedoms where they live.
