Because the alternative is being hungry, cold and homeless. Unless you don't mind having other people support you and getting on welfare, food stamps, subsidized housing.
Lucky people think their work is fun. In fact, they found that what was fun for them could also make them money. Lucky people. Others are, as you describe, drones. But they love their kids. They want them to have full bellies, roofs over their heads, good clothes to wear.
That's why we work.
I like your fantasy anyway. Mine is that I run away from my family--certain members anyway AND my job and go to some town where nobody would find me. I'd work in a bar and get myself some tattoos. "What'll it be, Mister." I fantasize saying that...

Oh aren't you ambitious? You might not think it, but work can be really fulfilling and some people enjoy working. People like work, because firstly and most importantly you earn money and you get enjoyment when you have reached your goals and further yourself. Oh, well I guess we are all drones then. At least we can buy a van to go on vacation, not to live there. Enjoy!!!!

GREAT ESCAPE
But let me tell you something dear, your condition not to work and live in woods, will make you work for yourself, like making the place compatible for yourself, bring water, clear bushes etc.,
That is how all work started, we saw some of us know how to do better work so we started take their help, later on it became like hiring people and now we are in the modern world of work, where the most lowest status belongs to people who WORK. Is it not injustice.
People like you are praised a intellectuals and being different and being rebels and made heros by media and idle minds and idle tongues.
An idle mind is a devil's workshop.

Work, it is a matter of whether if one has a passion for what he/she is doing. Self-sustenance is work in itself.
