What you're advocating is philosophical anarchism. It's an old idea; and one that has been tried numerous times over the centuries to no good effect.
There's a simple problem with your view -- it only works if every single person in society behaves perfectly. Without government, what do you do if someone attacks you? What do you do if someone just wants something you have and decides to harm you to get it?
Every time anarchy has been tried in the past it has failed because the fact is, people aren't angels, and aren't going to behave like them. What happens under true anarchy isn't peace and love, but a Hobbesian state of nature -- a "War of each against all."
So the question stands. What do you do when you or your loved ones are attacked by others? What you do is band together with like minded individuals for mutual defense. You create rule to live by, and get people to enforce those rules. In short, you create government, because you need order.
Can governments go too far? You bet. But your original question was "do we really need government?" And the answer to that question is, "Yes, we do."
Cheers, mate.

Government is needed for stability but for one person to control the whole country is foolish because how can one person really know what's needed for "ALL" the people anyway?
No one has the right to control every person in one country without the approval of many to decide what's right or wrong. A good government should have many good people to go and ask everyone for their opinions before anything is done just for the well being of the country and it's people.
Government would be useful if it worked for "ALL" the people instead of just a few. Government is for the people and not to be against the people like it seems to be lately.
It's the peoples government that is supposed to be and not the wealthy and cruel. No wonder so many people are afraid to speak up in fear of what may happen to them for doing so.
Yes, good government is really needed, now more then ever.
You do make some good points though and I do believe in most of what you said too.

I agree with the principle of doing away with a national government. Ofcourse a grassroots political system of some sort will naturally develop in the absence of one. People need a sense of security. Let each community manage its own affairs with local meetings. This is the system we used for thousands of years before monarchies and then governments started making sweeping across the board decisions. Decisions that didn't take everybody into consideration and certainly weren't good for everyone.
I have to say I wholeheartedly agree. Get rid of Government and bring back tribal decision making. Let people decide their own futures in smaller more managable societies. We only need to make national decision within the context of war or trade.
The military doesn't need Government. In fact Government only hampers the military. Free trade with no taxes to a national regime eliminates the other problem.
Screw Government.

Government is needed to have an orderly society. The leaders implement the laws in the operation of public services, construction of infrasture, welfare and others. The Congress makes laws for the state. The Judiciary provides the rules for people to follow. To avoid bad politicians, do not vote for them.

"strafed by the airforce" of which government??
Yes, of course we need government. If all government simply evaporated one day, there would still emerge some sort of hierarchy to keep order in the community.
Of all the various types of rule throughout history, Democracy (though not perfect) has turned out to be the best representation for all citizens, not survival of the fittest, tyranny, anarchy, or monarchy, and definitely not theocracy.

Governments also do many useful things such as maintaining highways, funding colleges and building prisons to keep the scum of society at bay. If you hate your government so much, I suggest you move to Somalia, which has been in a state of lawlessness for about 10 years and is now overrun by religious extremists who have decided marriages are invalid without parental consent. I think I'll stay in America.

I agree that a world in which we could peacefully exist without government would be perfect and better than our current one. But, sadly in our world Government is necessary to us because without people would be able to murder and rape etc with absolutely no consequence. So sadly government is necessary. However the best type of government is small minimal governing that does not interfere much. A government like this would be the best we could hope for.

Not necessarily this government we have. The legislative judicial and executive branches are supposed to monitor each other and insure all is well; unfortunately one is as warped as the other.
