Tungsten carbide is an alloy of (guess what) tungsten and carbon. It's extremely hard so it's used to coat cutting blades and for sandpaper. It's used as a surface coating because it's scratch resistant.

And it's much cheaper than gold.

Tungsten carbide is a chemical compound containing tungsten and carbon, and, no, it's not more expensive than gold. It's so routinely manutactured now that even tungsten carbide tipped masonry drill bits are available at low cost in home improvement stores. It's extremely hard, making it valuable for use in tools.
