My 12 yr old son has an xbox 360. He is an A student, football player, sweet, nice, non violent, all around great kid. He wants a game called Gears of War which is rated Mature-17 for violent, gore, blood and language. My mom refused to buy it for him for his birthday now he is begging me to get it. What do you guys think? Are these games really bad for them or if you have a good kid who has been raised the right way does it not affect them?

I think it depends on the game and your sons maturity. If your son is the type to copy something that he saw off TV, then I suggest you keep him away from this kind of game, but the way it sounds I would say your kid is mature enough to play an M-rated game. Gears of War does have mature content, and might possibly be the bloodiest game to date, but the game is completely fiction, it is no different from watching a Sci-Fi movie. I think that the game okay for a young one to play, just remind your son that there is a difference between a video game and reality. Grand Theft Auto on the other hand has content that I don't think is suitable for the younger crowd. And football is a violent sport, but you don't see people who watch it tackle random people on the street. A video game will not change your child, he won't grow up thinking it is okay to imitate what he saw in a video game. Even cartoons are pretty violent, but you don't see people dropping anvils on anybodys head.

I would never let my 12 yr old play a mature game with sex, drugs or bad language.
Violence however is iffy. I'm not that familiar with Gears of War.
Is it violence like just shooting people with a little blood or is there gore and body parts etc... ?

I wouldn't keep my 12 yr old from these things because I think he might copy them (Only the most immature teens attempt to copy the violence they see in video games, and usually they have bad home lives that cause that as well)

The reason I would keep such violence from my child is because you are only a child once. Why are we so determined to make our children older than they are? Why must we strip them of their innocence so quickly? Once a child's innocence is taken, it is gone for good and you can never get that back. So I try to delay anything that will rob my son of his innocence too early.

You know the maturity of your son better than anyone else. If you think that he can handle it, then get it for him. The blood/gore/violents/language are not any worse that what he would see in the movies or on TV.
