First it depends on your target market. Who are you hoping will buy? Hospitals, doctors, etc.? Get your company in trade journals, medical journals and take advantage of local medical conferences. Once you have customers, the best thing you can do is create a relationship with them that makes them want to help you out by refering you out. Customer service is key to that. For something like that, radio, and newspapers would not be a smart idea.

Put up a killer website demonstrating your skills. Then purchase ad space on industry websites, and keywords on google and yahoo. You can also promote on sites like http://www.craigslist.org and http://www.whyabe.com however that will just be to get some links back to your website, dont rely on either site to actual sell something.
Otherwise, the website is just the very first step. All of the answers above are great especially building the relationships with partner organizations.

Several Assumptions/Observations:

1)You are working in a specialized field (rather than the consumer market).

2)The animations that you create have two functions: a)they can be used for pedagogical purposes b)they are used to model research hypotheses/applications --correct?

3)for specialized markets such as the one you work in, clients generally turn to "best-of-breed" niche providers -- or at least they would turn to companies that have a track record of success -- in other words, your clients consist of those types of businesses that prebudget for the type of work that you do, hence they might not be attracted to a lower cost service that you provide, if they can go to a proven provider. If this is the case, then advertising might not be of great help.

Correct me if I'm wrong with any of these.

Potential Solutions:

I'm presuming that you are NOT interested in any sort of work that you would do for free (i.e. offering a hospital/lab free service in exchange for using their name for marketing purposes).

1) Partnerships: if your animations can indeed be used to model research findings, then it might suit you well to partner with an "incubator" stage research company/biotech firm, and agree on a contract that would defer payments to you until the company secures some sort of funding through an investor or sales of a product. This isn't the most "economical" solution, but it holds more potential for future profit than simply creating some samples of your work to show independently, in hopes of attracting interest.

2)government contracts: if you can actually create animations for teaching purposes, are there not centralized, state-run medical institutions that sollicit bids for projects? Are there projects for medical teaching tools that you could bid on?

3)partnerships with consulting firms: Are there medical consulting firms in your area with whom you might establish some sort of agreement? In other words, if these firms are working on a project for which they need something that you can offer them, then you would have prenegotiated a discounted rate with them so that they would select you as a service provider (you will also want to have an agreement in place that you could use their name/their clients name in your marketing materials).

No matter what happens, lesson #1 is to show your customers the value that you bring to them. Don't just tell them what you can do, show them and learn enough about their business so that you can tell them how you're going to give them animations that will make their work easier, more efficient and more profitable.
these are just a few ideas....best of luck.

Create a CD. Do a placed up card style mailing on your possibilities which supplies a loose CD! Have a tear off card that they placed their call and handle on and return it to you. call them and enable them to be attentive to that the CD is on the way. call them each week later and ask what they think of. i will layout the cardboard for you in case you desire and make the calls.
