Hmmm...well I didn't want to go to war and I understood that was a risk of joining the military even in 1995 when it was even a consideration. My brain and personality simply aren't compatible with taking direct orders unquestioningly or the kind of discipline that the military requires. People like me just don't fit in to that life style.

Now, I have a child, and I would never put myself in an obvious position of danger (any more than every day life endangers anybody). A child who loses a parent doesn't give a rodent's backside whether that parent died a hero or a bum on the street, all he knows is he's been left and will grow up without a parent.

There are all kinds of people in this world, and we're all suited for different things.

I preferred to go to college right out of high school and after I graduated I started working. I have some physical limitations that prevent me from doing well in the military. They don't prevent me from doing anything else, but I don't meet the minimum requirements.

I did marry a man in the US Air Force. He joined so that he could have help paying for college.

I think there are many ways to provide service to a country. I do not feel that being in a typical military setting is the best way for me to provide service to my country. I appreciate what the military provides us in terms of protection, and I was lucky enough to go to college after high school.

Now, if I'm needed, I'd be happy to offer what I learned in college (computers, etc.) towards helping the military. But grabbing a gun and shooting is not the best way I can help my country.

I never joined because I grew up somewhat removed from the military. I have had a privileged life in which I had the option of college after graduating high school. I don't delude myself as to my limits; I don't think I have what it takes to be successful in the military. However, if a draft was instituted, I would enlist before I had the opportunity to be drafted.

Joined got kicked out of boot camp cause I was not able to be brain washed and I am a leader not a follower, I don't do something because Iam told to I need to debate and find out why I must do what is being asked and what purpose it serves and how it will help me out now or in the future. I have a mind of my own and noone can make me do something I don't want to do, I will always find a way out. Now I would never be able to join I have back problems from the 8 times I have been rear ended and I am way overweight.

Wow...as a 41 year old I just made your cut. #1 - don't want to. Pretty simple. I have worked hard for this country in all of my jobs and continue to do so and represent this country with pride as my job takes me to other countries.

I see a lot of military folks answered the question and tried to speak for those of us who do not share their vocation. Of course it's not really their place to provide such answers.

We spend a lot of time in this country thanking the military. And we should. But we should not forget the many millions of other working Americans who continue to grow the economy of this country and ensure that our military personnel have the finest tanks, planes, ships, etc. available in the world.

One of the posters suggests that we can't make it in their world...and he/she may be right...but of course they might not be able to cut it in my world either.

So praise the military endlessly, but every now and again remember the American working man and woman who keep this country the greatest nation worth defending.

I will join the service when there is a President that I believe in and a representing party that is worth me fighting for. But as of right now, they are not worth a single vote.

You join the war ******.
