Human nature isn't geared towards either. I believe it's more geared to self preservation above all else and if that self preservation means improvement or destruction of certain aspects of ourselves then we make that sacrifice to preserve our existence

This is a super question.
If man behaves naturally, there would be continuous improvement with accumulation of knowledge and experience - human beings bestowed with higher power brain can do this better than other beings.
The trouble is that human beings are not behaving naturally - we are constantly trying to go against the nature for short term gains. This is the reason why we are moving towards self-destruction. Instead of adapting ourselves to the changing natural environment, we are arrogantly tinkering with the nature to make the environment suitable for us as we are. A few successes have made us even more assuming - the result is that we have become stagnant in the sense that we do not want to change ourselves to adapt to the changing needs of nature. Sure sign of moving towards self-destruction.

I believe human nature is naturally geared towards improvement but some individuals get lost on the way in their attitude, their behavior, their self esteem, and fall into a pattern of negative orientation that leads to self-destruction. But generally, people are oriented towards happiness and work on self-improvement to attain it.

"Up to now, nobody has said that there is anything beyond enlightenment. That's why I say, I am a milestone. With me, a new chapter in the history of consciousness begins. Enlightenment will be now the beginning, not the end. Beginning of a non-ending process in all dimensions of richness."
"I want to see power and peace in their perfection. I want a synthesis, a harmony of religion and science. This will give birth to the perfect individual, to the perfect culture, to a people rich in inner values and in outer achievements. The individual is neither the body nor the soul but a combination of the two. Therefore anything based on any one of these alone is incomplete."

It has to be self-improvemnt, because in spite of all the self-destructiveness people have had over all history, the world today is largely a better and healthier place to be. But then again, we're all fatter now.

human nature isn't fixed.
history makes billions of people today irrelevant.
some cope well (under amazing pressure)
others perish.
It's not always something you can work on to overcome.
