good question. you're no idiot

Because when a plane is going down at 90 mph (or more), no one will be able to properly get a parachute on themself. Plus, I'm sure they aren't cheap. Plus, if you're lucky, and you can jump out of the plane into the ocean before it crashes, I guess that's enough luck. I'd jump without the flotation if I could.

Its all about achieving a false sense of security. That's also why there's an emergency exit at 40,000 feet. Giving people parachutes would not help them survive in a crash, since the plane would be falling down on top of them (assuming they got them on before the plane crashed), and it would encourage idiots to try to jump out of the plane by putting theirs on and going out the emergency exit. If your plane crashes into the ocean you're gonna die. But giving you some sort of a "safety net" so to speak relaxes customers, and makes them feel safe.

there probably isnt, its just to keep you calm. chances are you die on impact. if a forced water landing is acchieved with little loss, then you will want to float. it makes no sense to have a parachut for everyone because the evauation procedure would be very unlikely to go smoothly, or even have enough time when the plane is plumeting thousands of feet per minute

plus, its too expensive to provide and maintain parachutes for 300 passengers

Flotation devices might be cheaper. Ever try parachuting from a jet? I have and they have to slow down really slow and fly low to keep from killing those jumping out. Probably wouldn't be time for people to get out even if you could get them to jump.

1st is FAA regulations cuz u have to sign a wavier to parachute jump and you can't explain how to operate a parachute in a few minutes. 2nd parachute's are not considered a saving device, if you land in water with a parachute you could still drown. Plus a million other reason's

i just seen united 93 today and was woundering that myself why they dont have parachutes instead of flotation devices cause there will be plenty of things to float on by that time u crash in the water

I've wondered that myself. I've come to the conclusion that airlines don't care about your safety enough to invest in parachutes, "floaties" are cheaper.

there is? anyway, i ask a similar question before, and the best answer was that parachutes will take too long for us to open it, anyway i don't understand it

good question! i would rather take my chance before the plane crashes, than try to swim afterwards, if we landed in water, which is probbly a long shot. plus you have a better chance before impact of making it.

That's a great question. I wish the FAA would answer that for us. Planes rip apart before they hit (or as they hit) water...
