Why do people from Iran call them selves Persians? Why don't they call them selves Iranians? Wouldn't it be the same as people from Russia calling them selves from the Soviet Union.

I am not an expert, but from my understanding, before it was Iran, it was Persia and the reason it became Iran is because the British took over that region which was then called Persia and changed around the borders and such and also changed the name to Iran. Thus, I suppose the feel that they where forcely made to call thier land Iran. I suppose a better analogy would be if another country took over the US by force and made us call it something else. We would probably out of pride call this land what WE believe it should be called.

Because Iran used to be called Persia. Iran is a name given to the area by the British when they divided the middle eastern portion of the "Empire" The people identify with their historical name. Not all Russians identified with being Soviets either.

Because Iran/ Iraq was originally named Persia for thousands of years before they were called Iran and Iraq. Russia was Russia LOOOONG before the Communists got together an assemblage of countries called the USSR.

I think its because Persia is divided into several land or country and one of them is Iran. But I think Iran is one of the places that consists of Persia before its divided. And I believe they still take pride in the kingdom of Persia which is famous in history.

ill give u a real reason...bc the world iran is almost same with iraq and iranians hate iraqis..and thy never never and never can tolerate some1 call thm arab.thy use persian bc its theyr race and tht time persia was a superpower.iran proud her history and dont wanna share it with iraqis

Because they are Persians. The name of your nation and the name of your country do not need to be same.
