company.....he has been there for about a month now. Last week he went into the hospital and was treated for exhaustion, a small case of malaria.....the Nigerian hospital does not accept his med coverage and wants cash.....they will not release him until he pays the bill....his company did not pay and he exhausted his cash somehow. Can they hold him captive for not paying his hospital bill...they won't let him go. He is a friend of someone I know in the US. ....she wants to know what he can do.

it reallsy depends on the policy of the hospital..

the med coverge you mentioned is insurance right?
if the med claim consist of worldwide coverage, then no reasons why the hospital do not accept.. did he talked to the insurance company?? get the company to expediate the process then and discuss with the insurance ..what about travel insurance??
otherwise, talk to the embassy or consulate...see if they can do a negotiation..
is the illness occurs due to or during work.. the company should be helping him. did he talk to company management.?? why was him in Nigeria??if he was sent there by a UK or US company.. why don't he contact the head office or something??

Try to get a hold of the UK embassy in Nigeria (I think they have one). They have people that deal with situations like this all the time.

Your friend is a victim of a very well known scam in the US. Let me guess... she met him on the internet? Google it, dear. It's everywhere. I get emails like this daily.
