I have a 99 Ford Contour that started clicking/ ticking today. We have already checked the oil, and that didn't solve the problem! It only does it when the car is idling, not as much when the gas is pushed. Thanks!!!!!!

If you don't actually SEE something that would make noise then I would guess you have a faulty spark plug wire. Look under the hood at night or in the dark to see if you see a spark jumping from one of them. If not, then unplug each one individually to see if the engine sounds different when you do one of them compared to the others. You have to buy an entire set to replace even one bad wire but they are easy to install. I hope that fixes your problem. Its one that I've seen and experienced several times.

You are probably hearing a valve lifter noise. That would happen as a car gets older and the oil pressure starts decreasing and the lifters begin to wear. Not dangerous unless they get real noisy. Likely never dangerous.

Your timing in your motor could be off, a simple timing belt adjustment could be needed or it could be that one of your bearings could be loose of you may even have a leaky gasket allowing air to enter the engine. also, depending on the mileage of your car you may want to use high mileage oil if u are'nt already. I'd take it to a mechanic asap you could be risking more engine trouble if you wait too long

it may possibly be the anti back lash dampers in the valve system one or more may have air trapped in them or may be wearing out and need replacement, whilst this wont affect the engine straight away like everything if you ignore it it may create a more expensive repair job later on so at the earliest convenience have a reputable mechanic check it for you and good luck.

It could be many things from an exhaust leak to a rod knocking to a fuel injector.
