The "bowler" was the traditional headwear of London city 'gents' and has become something of an English cultural icon. However English men stopped wearing hats as a matter of course in the 1960s.
The 1964 James Bond film, Goldfinger, featured a henchman known as Oddjob who would throw his hat as a weapon. The brim of this hat contanied a razor-sharp metal surface. I would imagine that this "bowler" would be extremely dangerous to handle.
