The best way to deal with salesmen is to play up to their arrogance...and to their egos. Let them think that the idea was theirs, whatever it is. Try not to approach them from a "superior" standpoint, but rather as a co-worker who needs their help. Obviously, they have more intelligence and experience than you do in their own minds. Let them think they are doing you a great favor by sharing it. As far as personalities, that's just the way they are and it is also why they are good at what they do. Try to give them (and yourself) some slack. To do otherwise will land you in a padded room.

Apparently u r not being assertive enough by letting these people walk all over u. Call a meeting and lay down some strict guidelines that r to be followed with no ifs or buts. And inform ur staff that jobs may be on the line if ur orders r not followed. Do not mingle or socialize with ur subordinates, as that ends in loss of respect for ur authority. U can`t be one of the gang and a boss at the same time. U could also take some classes at ur local college or univ. on how to be an autocratic manager. Believe it or not, but most people would rather work for a strict boss than one who is wishy-washy or indecisive. So get crackin ! Good luck.

What does company policy say about it? Set more strict guidelines for behaviour. Tell them to change the attitude or find another job. If you boot just one out the door the others should straighten up. Arrogance reflects bad on the company, that in itself is reason enough to let some go.

do they understand the 'why' behind your demands?

people are often unlikely to co-operate unless they have been given a reason to the directive... don't just say 'because we have too, its come from higher up, because i told to you'

try instead 'the branch target is X and breaking that down your target is Y.' tell them that your not being dramatic but ask them what will happen if the branch doesn't preform, if sales aren't made, what is the result?' Try to get them to realise that jobs may be lost.

Good Luck!
