Sharks can and do live in fresh water. Some of them at least. The Ganges River Shark is on of them. There is some debate that the River Sharks are actually Bull Sharks but in any event sharks can live in fresh water.
Sharks have adaptations that allow them to survive in fresh water. Click the third wiki link and search for "Osmoregulation".

cuz...
the amount of salt in the ocean is greater than that in fresh water... so when a shark enters fresh water the salt naturally goes from a high concentration (inside the shark) to a low concentration (the water outside)... and all that salt that was inside the sharks body is replaced by water.... so the shark kinda "drowns" to death.
but there is a shark called the Bull Shark that has special organs that help keep the salt inside of it so it can live in fresh water...

there is a species of sharks that can live in fresh water. not only that, they can live in BOTH salt & fresh water. if i am not wrong, this particular species is the bull shark. as for "why" most sharks can't, you can refer to this: http://www.elasmo-research.org/education/topics/p_sharks_in_fresh.htm
