I give you 7. And I divide them by decades (periods of time). It is almost impossibole to compare different racing ages, but let's try:

Before F1 era: Tazio Nuvolari - those guys were nut-cases at that time. Like skydivers without a parachute! True risk-takers

1950's: Juan Manuel Fangio - absolutely amazing what he was able to accomplish

1960's: Jacky Stewart - he revolutionized the racing style

1970's: Mario Andretti - remarkable crossover between American racing categories, and F1. A true adaptable and flexible driver

1980's: Alain Prost - 4 titles with all that competition? not bad at all!!!!!

1990's: Ayrton Senna - charisma and pure speed. I just wish he didn't pass away at Imola that sad day of May

2000's: Michael Schumacher - the records speak for themselves. However, if Fernando Alonso keeps winning through the end of this decade he may overshadow Schumacher. Improbable, but possible

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, to get the top 5 ???? I would pick Fangio and Senna without any doubts, then...........you finish up the list! I don't know who to eliminate out of the 7 I have picked.

Also, don't forget Clark, Fittipaldi, Petty, Lauda, Piquet, Gordon, and the rally drivers??? They are also incredible.

P.S. Hey! I am editing this response after the fact because I just noticed that dj don has copied my answer and pasted it into his own answer!!!! What's going on here? Is it a mistake, or just lack of creativity??? Strange, indeed!

Needless to say that at the top there is1) Michael Schumacher who has already set all the records. Tough he has some controversial wins, he is the only driver who can win a race under any conditions. Won 7 titles, 1994-95,&200-04with 04 season, won 12 out of first 13. Then there is2) Juan Manul Fangio won 5 titles 1951, 1954-1957, Then3) Alain Prost won 4 titles 1985-86,1988, 1993. Ofcourse,4) Fernando is there after him & I think 5) Kimi would be the next dominating champ

Fangio is undisputedly the best. Senna and Prost are marginally behind, but that margin is thinner than human hair.
4 and 5... I'd say probably either Niki Lauda or Mika Hakkinen (champions coming back from the dead) and probably the previous "youngest F1 champion" (Emerson Fittipaldi).

This question can not be answered objectively. If you the asker say you will not count answers without a certain driver you are not asking a neutral question. It should have been stated that you only wanted F1 drivers, most of the people here are NASCAR fans and they gave a respectable cross section of answers to a poor question.
