I have AVG. It is set to scan once a day, and to check for updates and automatically download them. I have used AVG for a coupleof years and it has been good for the most part.
But, in the couple of days, computer has been infected with a couple of things, one of them was sasser worm. Even the name of the file that showed up in my system32 folder should have been caught by the AVG because of the spelling, but it was not. (The file name was lsasss.exe.)
I am now going to uninstallAVG and erase all the traces I can find of it off my system, and try Avast.
This isn't really much of an answer, sorry.

There is no comparison to be made between those 2. Hands down AVG wins out. They are currently phasing out the AVG 7.1 and are producing 7.5 for download. It comes with a new malware suite.
We have used it here with great success, coupled with other products for redundancy.

PS...use the firewall that Windows provides.

I love AVG but I also like Avast alot. Both are great but you can only use one. I recommend AVG.
I used AVG on large networks before and I noticed it detected viruses better then version you have to pay for like norton.

Hi,
If you plan to use the PC for a week you do good downloading a free software. I suggest AVG.
However, the non free ones are all very cheap and in my opinion why should you rely on a free one for something so much important such as security!

I have Avast and I love it. I got it because I read it was the best freebie in a Consumer Reports magazine.
