Settlers of Catan from Mayfair Games. A simple building and trading game played on a board made up of hexagonal tiles. The tiles are placed together randomly before each game starts thus ensuring good replay value. Players trade resources, and build roads, settlements, and cities. The basic game is for 4 players and takes about an hour and a half or two hours (less if everyone is familiar with the rules or you modify the victory conditions).
Game of Thrones by Fantasy Flight is one of the best strategy to come out lately. Based on the books by George RR Martin, each player leads a different Noble House in competition for the throne. GoT has some really clever mechanics where players use markers to assign orders to their various units on the map (nice quality wood components). Combat is dice-less where players secretly select a leader card to decide the final strength of their force.
Finally, if you have the time and dedicated players, I recommend trying the science fiction game Twilight Imperium also by Fantasy Flight. Again, the board is made up of hexagonal tiles and created anew for each game. Players build fleets, colonize planets, trade with other players, vote on legislation at the galactic assembly, scheme, back-stab, and have epic space battles.
I have linked Funagain Games below. They are also a great resource for board and card game goodness.
Cheers!

There are a lot of great games coming out all of the time... Several notable games from the last couple of years:
1) Ticket to Ride -- A great game for 2-5 players, it won the German 'Game of the Year' in 2004. It's a fun little game with some resemblance to Rummy, in that players are collecting colored train cards to claim connections between cities across the United States. Each time a player plays a connection, that player scores based on the length of connection. Additionally, each player has secret goals of connecting certain cities on the board with their train routes. All players must weigh and balance their position of claiming certain connections for themselves, or taking connections they know another player needs.
2) Alhambra - A great tile game where players manage their hands of cards and make plans to purchase buildings for their grand complex. Each round, there is a "market" of four buildings up for sale, each purchasable in one of four "currencies". Additionally, there is a "market" of currencies available. On a player's turn, that player can either take currency from the currency market, or spend currency from his or her hand to purchase one of the tiles in the market. The added bonus is that if a player pays for a tile using the exact amount of money specified, that player gets to take another turn. Players build their building complexes, and score points in at three somewhat-random scoring breaks where the players who have the most of certain building types score lots of points.
3) Carcassonne -- A fun tile laying game based on a city in France. Winner of the German 'Game of the Year' in 2001. On each turn, a player takes a tile from the bag and fits it into the existing city/gameboard. Each tile has features on it like parts of a city, roads, or countryside. A player must connect the correct parts to the exiting parts in the city. After a player has done so, that player can play one of their pieces (a "meeple") onto that tile to claim one of the aspects. Aspects grow until they are completed (e.g. road has a beginning and an end, city is entirely enclosed) and then a player scores based on the size of the feature they claimed

You may not know, but 500 new games come out every year that aren't Monopoly, Scrabble, Sorry, or Uno.
