1) First of all, familiarize yourself with whatever subject you want to persuade someone about. There's no trick to substitute for being well-informed about what you want to say.

2) Know your audience. If they are knowledgeable about the subject you want to persuade them about, you may want to do your research well and meticulously present something that is factual and has a rational appeal. If the audience doesn't know much about the thing you want to talk to them/him/her about, an emotional appeal might work better. An example of the latter would be making a pretty and flashy and/or funny presentation, or giving food or "bribes," or scaring them into buying into your idea/argument (e.g. persuading someone to buy your brand of toothpaste by telling them that other toothpaste brands cause cancer, etc.).

You may also want to their sense of conformity or project an air of authority. Quote a (supposedly) reliable source or authority on the subject. Or say something like "everyone is doing this," or "everyone knows that..." etc.

3) Talking fast (and clearly?) has been found to increase a listener's perception that you know what you're talking about.

4) It can't hurt to look your best either. Attractive individuals tend to grab attention and tend to seem credible.

There are other findings and tips you can find on persuasion in any social psychology text. This is some of what I can remember... I hope this helps. Haha.

first you need to believe in what you're selling... er, persuading about.

then you need to outline the benefits of whatever it is, and compare them to the lame qualities of the alternatives.

finally, invite your listener to agree that your choice is the right choice.
