You can breastfeed your babies for as long as you & they want to. Although breastfeeding them as college students may be pretty strange :-)

Seriously though, people who breastfeed don't exclusively breastfeed their toddlers/preschoolers. They also eat other food. Why switch them from milk that's especially made for humans to milk that is made for baby cows? The average weaning age in the world is something like 4.2 years.

Happy breastfeeding :)

As long as you breastfeed your body will continue to produce milk. I saw on an episode of 20/20 maybe 5 or 7 years ago. About a woman who was still breast feeding her 6 year old. Maybe once or twice a day the girl would get a snack from mommy, the women nursed her son till he was about 8 years old, and he self weaned themselves. They ate other food just like any other child, baby food and would sometimes even have some formal milk so its not like they were just eating breast milk all the time. As they got older they had less and less, nursed for short periods of time.

Breastmilk is produced by supply and demand. In centuries past, a wetnurse could nurse many babies -- even when the woman was well past the childbearing age!

The more you nurse, the more milk you produce.

And don't let the ignorant people tell you how long to nurse. That's a matter strictly between you and your babies. Every family is different.

You're doing the very best you can by giving your babies an optimal start in life. Best wishes to all of you!

Breastfeeding is good for the child and good for you ... although, other people can be difficult.

In many world cultures, people breastfeed until the child weens themselves, which is often around 4 years of age, and your body normally will continue to produce enough milk for as long as you nurse regularly, and stay healthy.

Good luck.

as long as you and they like. I bf'd for 2 years, and would have done longer if I had been able too. Americans freak out when kids older than 2 are breastfed (heck, my MIL thought going past 6 months was excessive), but its best for the babies to have at least 1 yr, if not 2. Good luck, I hear its hard to nurse twins. remember, if they have a bottle of formula now and then, it will not hurt, and supplimenting will help your body to recover.

That is soooo great that you want to give your babies a healthy start!!!
The answer is....As long as it is mutually desirable! Natural human weaning age is somewhere between the ages of 4-8 years old. That is when they lose their milk teeth!
After age 1 they will eat a lot of solids anyway.

My daughter self-weaned at 40 months and my son is 21 months and going strong. My mom breastfed my twin brothers for 1.5 years and I am a childcare provider for 3 y.o. twins that still occasionally nurse!

Why do you want to feed them breastmilk for "many years"?? That's sick...most babies breastfeed for about 6-12 months. What are you going to do when they're like 4? Stop them in the middle of their little league game and pull out the boobs for a mid-inning snack? I think it's nasty when women have toddlers and still breastfeed...they need to start on solid foods at some point, not drink milk for "many years".

Usually 1 to one and a half would be really good, especially with twins. It isn't really normal after that and not really healthy either. It wouldn't hurt them but emotionally it isn't smart and nutritionally they should be eating their own food by then. besides, do you really want your 4 year old yanking your shirt up in public for a drink? It will happen.

You can breastfeed you baby up to fours years old. If you just breastfeed for your first six weeks thats good. It's really to your convience but it's four years. Do you know if you breastfeed for three months you can reduce the chance of getting breast cancer. The reason i know this because i have a nurse i see every week and she gave a book on breastfeeding and i ask her these same questions.
