Of ancient mediterranian art, I'd have to say Greek. Greek sculpture, in particular, was unmatched in the ancient Mediterranian, and their stylized art tended to be much more organic then other cultures.
As to which period of ancient Greek art... well, whichever one was the most recent, I suppose.
Out of any period: modern, unquestionably, and I don't mean "modern art". Modern cinema, when it's good, is some of the best visual art ever produced, and I think history will remember it as such.

This is certainly not a period, but rather a movement, started in the early 70's, and to a certain extent continuing today - New Genre Public Art. I am drawn to this movement for it's move away from the self absorbed practices of the Modernists ie. art for art's sake. This is art for the community's sake, interested in relationships, restoration and upliftment. Such art includes murals, public scuplture, performance etc. A great person to look up would be Suzi Gablik. (sorry I know this is not relevant to your question, but I'm pretty passionate about it :)

The Dark ages, as for why? because I love drawing sweeping battle-scenes and forgotten heroes, another era I'm interested in is the future- because I play a bunch of futuristic role-playing games such as Shadowrun, Rifts, and a few others. I draw about the future because I just want to imagine what it would be like.
