It is a 90's corporate buzzword . Products that are otherwise made within the premises of a manufacturing or service corporation will now be "farmed out" to save money.

I know way more than I want to know about it. My ex-hubby worked for Motorola, the king of outsourcing. He was forced out of his job after an illness caused by stress from their outsourcing policies when he couldn't drive the two hours to get to work. He could have done it from home with no problem, but they forced him to resign and cash in his 401K so we could live and replaced him with a revolving group of trainees from India.

Motorola built a huge plant in Illinois that would eventually employ a medium sized city full of people. Before it was even finished they abandoned it and built an identical plant in India.

Manufacturing for some of the most sensitive computer chips available, used in our airplanes, weapon systems, you name it are now made in China. You know, the same country that flouts our copyright and patent laws to copy everything from VCR's to Chevrolet's.

Since 2000 Motorola alone has laid off hundreds of thousands of engineers who can't find work and when they do it's temporary and under short term contract with no benefits and a fraction of the pay they received before outsourcing started. Our best talent is being wasted so that companies like them can make bigger profits and more people live below poverty level.

What do you want to know about it? I've worked in a center wherein work was outsourced from the US. There are different aspects about this so you'll have to give parameters to your question.
