Basically, they bend the light and focus it on a specific spot. In glasses, that spot is on the retina at the back of the eyeball, which then feeds the images to the brain where they are translated. In a camera, it focusses the light on the film. A microscrope focusses the light on the stage (where the glass slide goes) so you can look through the eyepiece and see a magnified view of whatever is on the slide.
It's remarkable, when you think about it, how simple, yet how complex it can be.
