There were several during this time period, especially the Vietnam War (All You Need Is Love/Give Peace A Chance), the famine in Bangladesh (George Harrison cut a record and donated the proceeds to help them). I highly recommend "The Beatles" (a new book) to you - written by Derek Taylor. It is thick, and full of lots of information about this group.
-Death of Manager Brian Epstein (suicide)
-Growing Up (wanting a family/privacy)
-Beatlemania (out of control; could not hear themselves in concert because the screams were so loud)
-Dissatisfaction with life on the road
-Drug experimentation
-Greed (Paul's wife's father (lawyer) showed him a way to gain the lion's share of The Beatles' wealth, creating animosity when it was discovered
-Constant presence of Yoko Ono in recording sessions, etc.

I'd say the Vietnam war certainly had an effect on John Lennon. As far as other effects, when I think of them, the Beatles did more to create them then the other way around. They must have been tapped into a higher conciousness then the rest of us! I am sure glad they expanded our consciousness along with theirs! The pill. That caused the free love movement. I think they only saw that movement as all being more loving to each other, in a non-sexual way as well. I don't think LSD had much affect on them. They say they didn't take any! Or hardly any, we just thought they did. Timothy Leary did!

Well, there was the Vietnam War, and there was their meeting with the Maharajah Marrakesh, and there was the marriage of John and Yoko - that was definitely a significant event that affected the band.

A new music wave named "psychedelic", the boys and girls were most interested on those stuff including LSD, post hippies ideas, colorful backgrounds and lights. In fact on the very beginning of the psychedelic era McCartney was totally against to this music.
