One of my girlfriends had her IUD fall out last night. She said she felt alot of pain & went to the bathroom to find it comming out. She had it put in about one month ago, is this normal? Has anyone else had this problem & if so did you have another one put in?

As a Nurse I would recommend getting a new one inserted because you run the chance of it expeling again. Usually IF the IUD is going to expel it will do so in the 1st month. If the Dr. who inserted it has inserted them for 20 years most likely it wasn't the Dr.'s fault but that her body rejected it. But if she really wants to try and have another one inserted she may but I wouldn't recommend it that's just another waste of $500 if it expels for a 2 nd time

It's not normal, but it happens. It could be that the dr. didn't position it quite right, or it shifted on it's own afterwards, or even that she is just not a good candidate for an IUD. I don't see any reason why she couldn't have another put in.

I have had mine for 8 months, and it is fine. I did think it was slipping out and went to the dr, but they said that when it was put in, the string wasn't cut short enough and that's all the problem was.

Anyway, she'll want to call her dr right away if she hasn't already, and make sure to use another method of birth control in the meantime. If she had sex today, the day that it fell out, or even the day before it fell out, the dr. will probably want to do a blood test for pregnancy before they insert a new one, just to be on the safe side.
