This question typically comes up as you are interviewing for a position, or are in a place where you and several others are being looked at for promotion.

YOU need to prepare well BEFORE you go into the interview process. What are your goals (in relation to placement at the company) over the next 5 years -- stay in the position, go for further upgrades/training, get another degree, go for promotion -- they are looking for worthwhile goals/ideas that mesh with the way the business sees itself.

SO ... do your homework and know the business you are applying for and mesh your 5 year goals with what they have in their business plan.

I see this question a lot, especially in job interviews. Usually it means stating your goals, your aspirations, what you hope to be doing in the near future.
example: I see myself retired in the next 5 years, working as a designer for a theater part time , my house paid off and both kids in college. I plan to travel and work abroad teaching English.
..what about you? Writing it down helps you focus on your dreams and you have more of a tendency to actually follow through if you do. Good Luck!

.. What's so hard? Think about where you want to be in 5 years. If you're looking to get into college, fresh out of high school, that's 4 years of school, so, within 5 years, you could be working at the job of your choice. So, what would the job of your choice be? If you don't have a specific idea, like I still don't, just make a path towards what kind of major you're aiming for. An idea of what kind of career you want. If you want a famiy at that time, write about that. Something that proves you deserve to get into that school and recieve the education for a beneficial purpose, and that you really want it.
