Does anyone know about taking a bus tour of the city for a short time there or do you have any other suggestions as I will be coming and going from the airport?

The airport had a trainstation. Catch a train to Amsterdam Central Station. From there you can walk your way straight from the main exit/entrance over the Damrak to the Dam Square.

Along the way to the Dam Square, you find the Sex Museum (2.50 euro fee only).

When you get to the Dam, you can turn left towards the red light district with tattoo shops and coffee shops with exellent marihuana -- or visit Madam Tussauds at the Dam Square.

If you like to keep it slow, no walking:

In front of the train station are the canal boats that take you on a city roundtrip with english speaking tourguide.
