I assume you're talking about "musicians" as someone who plays in a band or a singer/songwriter (vs a professional violinist who plays in an orchestra, who can easily make a living). It's definitely possible, but it depends on how proactive you are and what you're trying to do with your skill. If you just want to play at a bar every Friday night then it's going to be pretty hard to make a living.

You can sell CDs (or tracks on iTunes), merchandise... you can use your skill to write jingles or find someone to commission a work, perform on recordings as a studio musician, teach private lessons, play for parties, weddings, local theater productions... etc
