From Wikipedia:

There are numerous parasites and predators of cockroaches, but few of them have proven to be highly effective for biological control. Wasps in the family Evaniidae are perhaps the most effective insect predators, as they attack the egg cases, and wasps in the family Ampulicidae are predators on adult and nymphal cockroaches (e.g., Ampulex compressa). The house centipede, however, is probably the most effective control agent of cockroaches, though most homeowners find the centipedes themselves objectionable. Preventative measures include keeping all food stored away in sealed containers, using garbage cans with a tight lid, frequent cleaning in the kitchen, and regular vacuuming. Any water leaks, such as dripping taps, should also be repaired. It is also helpful to seal off any entry points, such as holes around baseboards, pipes, doors, and windows with some steel wool and some cement or putty. Once a cockroach infestation occurs, chemical controls may help alleviate the problem. Bait stations, gels containing hydramethylnon, as well as boric acid powder, are toxic to cockroaches. Baits with egg killers are also quite effective at reducing the cockroach population. A simple homemade Vegas cockroach trap is reported to be successful. Additionally, pest control products containing deltamethrin are very effective.

No matter how well you clean, roaches will find food somewhere in your building. There is a new pest control product for roaches that is specifically poisinous to them--but not to other bugs. It destroys their little nervous systems. Call an exterminator even if your apt. manager won't. Pay the price, then send him the bill. My dad just retired as a bug man, and he says that this new stuff is really effective. No need to "bomb" anymore or to spray things that are toxic to humans and pets.

I solved this problem in an apartment I lived in years ago. You definitely have to thoroughly clean the apartment - that means behind the fridge and behind the stove, basically everywhere. Once you've done that you have to get Raid (or something like it) and spray all around all the doors and windows - also around any openings inside the apartment where the critters could be hiding.

You'll find dead roaches trying to crawl in, but not any live ones, if you are thorough.

If your infestation is mammoth though, I agree with your other answerer - you'll have to get the landlord to bug-bomb the whole complex.

Good luck!

It's hard in apartments because they go back and forth from apt. to apt. If your manager won't bug bomb the whole place at once, that makes your job harder. You can talk to your neighbors to bomb on the same day, to kill 'em instead of sending them into hiding in the next place, if you're comfortable with that.

Rather than getting Raid, try the little roach bait traps, since they eat it and take it back to their nest. A good bombing plus some traps can help a lot. Also, in addition to not leaving food out, watch for standing water as well. Good luck!

UGGHH!! I hate those things.. I lived in Asia and we had them a lot.. First of all.. you said you clean everything.. Make sure that the UNDER sink area is totally clean clean clean. What we used and it was very good was boric acid(powder of course) and I(and others) put that stuff under the sinks, and any place where those critters went but NOT where kids or pets can get at it.

A friend of mine used(bought) some stuff and I ask them to give me the web site.. I have not tried it as I do not now have roach problems but they SWORE by it.. that web site is:

u MUST make sure that you do not drop any crumbs and that your counter tops are meticulously clean/ Even take a knife and scrape into the corners. The reason that they keep returning is for food that they find there. If they didn't find it they wouldn't be there. I don't know if they still produce it but the company Black Flaf had a product called Roach Hotel where you puncture a disk, they get into it and they bring the poisin back to their nests.

I had a good chuckle over the geckos. That sounds like a good male solution. Probably not the best solution but at least I'd think geckos would beat the heck out of having roaches.

roaches are probably breading inside the walls of your apartment, refrigerator, stove, boxes, get manager to spray the apartment complex by a professional pest exterminator company.

Boric acid, it is very effective when used properly for killing cockroaches and most other insects.
You can also get a house lizard, they are natural enemies and will eat them. More information at http://tinyurl.com/ofxkk
