It is slang for a rural fool from the American South. It comes from the heavy tan one receives on the back of ones neck from working outside performing manual labor under the hot Southern sun. Rednecks were known by other names in the past: hillbillies, white trash, peckerwoods, and in Cajun country, coonasses. They are low born, low class white people of the farming or low working class.

In recent years, the Red Neck subculture has become a badge of honor among many. Comedians like Jeff Foxworthy, NASCAR racing, many magazines, T-shirt makers, and even the National Rifle Association have played this up. What was once a slur has become a badge of honor for many throughout the South.

I assume you're not from around here.... that would be a strange thing for someone who just moved to this country... Check out Jeff Foxworthy's comedy sketch or watch "My Name is Earl" on NBC.

A generic definition is: Redneck, in modern usage, predominantly refers to a particular stereotype of people who may be found in many regions of the United States or Canada. The word can be used either as a pejorative or as a matter of pride, depending on context.

Usage of the term redneck generally differs from hick and hillbilly, because rednecks reject or resist assimilation into the dominant culture, while hicks and hillbillies theoretically are isolated from the dominant culture.

You will no doubt get some off the wall answers, but it is a way of thinking as much as anything else. Many associate the term with people who live in trailer parks. They drink beer from cans and then smash them, in a show of strength. They're aluminum now but used to be steel. It's a southern thing. Good ole' boys thing. Usually they stick together no matter what. Usually they are good men. But as with any group of people there are bad ones in the bunch. Those are the ones who give the term "redneck" a bad name. For the most part we are good hard working people, lower middle-class. Enough to get by on, but not enough for luxuries. Yard/garage sales are a God send to many of us. We enjoy TV, church, family gatherings, where everyone brings a dish, usually chicken, hamburgers, beans and cornbread. Simple things. Truely good people. Many of the men hunt and fish, women can food, and quilt, sew, embroidry. Tell bad jokes about, and make fun of the "fancy rich people" and their entertainment(opera, golf, polo). Just like the rich can't understand or think about living like we do. And make fun, or joke about us. But in the end we are all children of God and will all have the same when we get to Heaven, the Love of God. Hope this helps.

I consider myself an educated redneck!! In my opinion, a redneck is someone who is comfortable living their life regardless of what others think. We usually don't care if we're seen as 'politically correct'! We can be outspoken and determined. We are ingenious...in a pinch most of us have a little 'shade tree mechanic' in us, etc...A redneck is a good ole boy or good ole girl, mostly congenial, so long as we're not seriously crossed, then look out, Ma Maw, I"m gettin' the shotgun!! LOL...I think we all have a little 'redneck' in us if the truth be known......

It is usually used to identify a person from the south. Generally fun and good natured in my opinion. Some people like to refer to them as stupid, ignorant hillbillies. But I'm from the south and I guess that YES I'M A REDNECK and PROUD OF IT.
