How long would it take to go from one end to the other in a car going about 45 mph? This is driving me nuts! Can someone please give me some kind of scale?

4 days walk.
1 day about 20-30 kms,
So that would be about 80-100 km. (60 miles for american imperialists...)

Ridiculous. Since there is NO way to guess the average speed of the fellowship during their sojourn in the mines, there is no way to guage how far they travelled in terms of distance as the crows of Saruman fly. The mines are notoriously twisty and labyrinthine, so even if you knew that they moved at say, 3 miles per hour and travelled 15 hours per day, you STILL wouldn't know the exact distance from one side to the other. As for how long it would take in a car, that's easy. Forever. You could never get over the chasm in a car. You'd be Balrog bait the first time you tried.
