Rachmaninov is my favorite, but Chopin and Schumann are always good too.

I hear a lot of more recently composed music in a classical style that I enjoy, but I don't listen to enough of it to give a specific favorite. Ray Charles is good. I know an evangalist who plays piano more beautifully than most famous composers I've heard. However, I'm a firm believer that live music is far better than anything recorded.
Personally, I find music with soul to be the most moving, even when not the best of quality. Playing my piano alone in the dark with my eyes closed does more for me than most forms of relaxation.
Music is about the feeling...not the notes. =)

If you are looking for some awesome piano music, try a couple of these suggestions. David Lanz (Fireside Dance is a good one), George Winston, Jim Brickman. Another idea would be to Google -Windham Hill- It's a record label that produces alot of piano/easy listening music. Some of these selections include piano with orchestral back up, and some are piano only. Most of the music I am referring to is not "classical" in the historic sense, however, if you enjoy piano, some of these new age artists will not disappoint. Enjoy my friend!

Some of my favorites by Rachmaninoff: 2nd piano concerto (the concertos are long, but worth every second!) 3rd piano concerto (and the concertos are with orchestra) Prelude in D major (all the preludes are solo piano) Prelude in F#minor (F sharp major) Prelude in Gb major (G flat major) Prelude in Bb minor etc. Prelude in G major The above are all absolute favorites of mine...all very emotional, but with exactly the dark, sad tint that I think you are looking for. Also you may enjoy many Chopin Nocturnes (e minor, Db major, Eb major), Trois Gymnopedie by Satie, Un Sospiro by Liszt. Happy listening!
