I'm thinking it might be fun.....or entirely hellish and impossible....to attempt a duplication/approximation of the meal for 'movie night' with friends.

OK, failing this, can anyone recommend the same for another movie about food or a climatic meal?

Ahhh.....I can't believe you mentioned this movie...happens to be one of my all time favorite movies.....I loved the way the whole meal is described by the general.
It was so well done....talk about a love affair with food...that was definitely the best!
Yes, I would highly recommend duplicating the meal....why don't you watch it...and get the recipes from it.....sorry I can't give you the recipes but thanks...I will watch this soon with friends.
Two other favorite food movies which I absolutely adored were "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman" this is a chinese film about a father and his daughters...he is a chef and makes everything for his girls.....the food is exquisite! ALso they made an american film too (Hector Alizondo played the dad);
My other food film is "Like Water for Chocolate".
If you know Babette's Feast you will know these movies......
FYI....my ex boyfriend and I use to have theme nights for friends.....a foreign film and dinner...French film, french food..etc.
I think you might have trouble with the wine from Babette's Feast....yes a little hellish but absolutely a great idea! Enjoy!

I fear I don't have any recipes from Babbette's Feast-but other good food movies are Chocolat and Like Water for Chocolate. Eat Drink, Man Woman, Tortilla Soup, When do We Eat?, and Soul Food come to mind. I also like Woman on Top and Simply Irresistible as well
