What is the clump of pink pods just under the soil level in my yard?

I took the top off and there is a slime ball looking thing in there? I called the extension office and they told me they were related to the growth of mushrooms nearby. They are 2 inches diameter. Thanks for answers!

sounds like a fungus. Mushrooms are actually a cobweb looking organism that grows under the soil surface. When they want to they will send the mushroom as we know it which is the fruiting body of the plant.
