You're right that being mature and responsible doesn't come automatically at age 18.

Thirteen is a good age - you're old enough to start enjoying yourself, but young enough not to have any real worries or responsibilities.

Don't try to grow up too fast - you've got years and years of that ahead of you. Have fun being a teenager.

In some cultures, like Jews, 13 is considered the age a child becomes an adult. The bad thing is, in this country, everyone is lazy and we pamper our children too much. A 13 year old now days have never experienced enough at that age to actually develop a sense of maturity because they have been left to their own devices or have been raised by tv and video games. A 13 year old now days could not make an extreme decision. Heck, most can't even spell correctly at 13, and obviously can't type a sentence correctly...ever heard of a space bar? So how do you think they could be give more responsibility.

The ones that get a hold of alcohol, abuse it. And believe me kid, you do not WANT more responsibility. Responsibility is not what you think it is at that age. Believe me, I know, I'm only 24, I remember it. Responsibility is having to care for yourself. You have to work and earn the money, pay the bills, make the decisions. And you may think now, "That's not hard, I can do that." But believe me, it's not what you think. It's not like school. When you have "responsibility", you don't have play time. I don't even remember what it was like to have time to go to the movies or bowling. Life is basically work, dinner, bed, five days a week. And then on your days off, it's clean house and shop. You don't have a day to have fun. And believe me, driving, voting, and drinking are not all it's cut out to be.

Besides I was "responsible" at 13, I was what the teachers thought was the perfect child, and I thought I deserved more credit too. I was dead wrong. I couldn't have handled an ounce of what my mom had to put up with, me always saying "you don't respect me," or "give me some credit," and her out there everyday just trying to make sure we had food and heat everyday.

Grow up kid, and then you'll know what being responsible REALLY means. When you asking for more credit and responsibility, that means you are not ready for it. You will see it trickling more and more into your life as you get older. Then you will wish you could be 13 again. I know I sure do.

I am 21 and felt that way when I was thirteen, but now I look at my thirteen year old sister and I realize that I really had a LOT to learn. Thirteen year olds can be pretty responsible, but I don't think it would be safe for them to drink or drive (and definately not both!)

I think some teenagers are more mature than people give them credit for. Unfortunately, the immature teens get lumped together with the mature, responsible teens and they end up being ignored until they're older. That was the one thing I hated about being a teenager, no one took me seriously just because of my age.

yes, some 13 year olds are mature but most are not. All the 13 years olds i know are know-it-all, drama king/queens, whiny, following, liars....I was one of the mature 13 year olds, and i used to think this too...but now that im 18, i see that wasnt as mature as i thought i was.

my point is, if you really have to ask, then maybe you are not as mature as you think you are....but yeah thats all i wanted to say luv...

peace and love- chai
