Animal rehab is not just physical therapy. Rehabbing animals is what rescuers do for animals who have been neglected, abused, have been injured. Rehabbing often means being up all night with a dog so starved they may not make it until morning giving it pedialyte hoping it will survive. Rehabbing means picking up an orphaned raccoon and raising it until it's old enough to be released. Rehabbing means taking the worst of what people can do to an animal and make it right again. Sometimes it involves healing the spirit as well as the body. It's not always done in a clinical setting. There are many types of rehabbers. I rehabilitate wildlife and exotic animals. This is done out of my home. There are many more people who do it this way than done in clinics.

Why? I've touched on some of the why's, but take a look at these links...it is some of the animals that we have rescued...and many have been rehabilitated and are ready for new homes...:-)

Animal Rehabilitation is physical therapy for pets.
The service offers veterinarians and pet owners more options for their animals who have had surgery, prolonged illness, or those with injuries.

Rehabilitation can help decrease pain, speed healing, and return animals to normal function through increased strength and improved cardiovascular fitness.

Common diagnoses seen include, but are not limited to:

Arthritis
Hip Dysplasia
Fractures
Post Surgical Ligament Repair
Spinal Surgery
Fibrocartilagenous Embolism (FCE)
Herniated Discs

I have also heard this term used for programs that introduce specially trained animals to visit the sick & injured in hospitals and nursing homes...but I'm not sure if that's the same thing you were referring to...

Abused animals (that an animal shelter or police find, e.g. rspca/spca) go into rehabilitation(rehab) so they can calm down and think straight, because if they get adopted and then they go haywire, they'll get sued.... (i think...)
Hope it helps
