definitly i find lyrics no big deal, they usually do not affect my opinion of a song. i hate when everyone puts the emphasize on them. im not dissing good lyrics, but remember, they are songs, not poems, people!

I think what attracts me to a song is the melody, but i won't like it if it has **** lyrics. It can be the most brilliant peoce of music but without lyrics to hold the song up it's hopeless. I think that is where so many budding musicians loose out. They can play an instrument but can't write or sing songs. Obviously for me, an admirer of more country aligned music, the vocals don't have to be spectacular. I can love music from Bob Dylan to Roy Orbison and anything in between.
Now let me illustrate. A song written by George Harrison, called Norwegian Wood. It's got a great tune to it, but if you listen to the lyrics they are extremely simple and basic. It doesn't hold up for me without a decent lyric.
To me a great song is about the way the artist fits the lyrics to a tune and makes it unique. Both are key elements in a song but as an admirer of both the simple melodies of folk and country to the more robust sounds of the blues, a great lyric makes a simple tune enjoyable.
Thanks!

I agree, I listen to it for the beat and rhythm. Now some songs I hate the beat, but the lyrics catch my attention and I end up falling in love with the song. I like long guitar riffs and drum solos, which is why Hotel California and Ana Goda Da Vida are two of my favorite songs of all time!

Well, I am a big music junkie and very old school. I look for harmony and the quality of the singer's voice. anyone can sing in a studio with help from all the fancy gadgets available today. I like to hear singers that can sing without the music and still hold your attention because u r so amazed that they really sound that well without the music.

I actually listen for lyrics first. Because a song can have the crappiest beat ever, but if you just listen to it and actually understand the message that the artist is trying to get through to the listener, it's ten times better than just listening to a beat or anything petty like that.

first i look for a nice melodious beat that you can either bob your head to, or maybe headbang, even though headbangin aint my cup o tea (it is 4 sum ppl)
then its about the lyrics, which, to me at least, can be almost as important as the beat.
like if you hav a tight beat, but the song is bout how much $$ u have, its lame
so its back and forth wit me.....MUSIC IS LIFE

I look for a good melody. If it moves me and I can listen to it ove r and over without getting tired of it, it's a good song....

The melody is most important, so is it's originality, and the lyrics too.
