He changed it to one of the numbers he wore in high school. The two numbers he wore in high school were 24 and 33 (33 was his fathers number when he played pro ball). When he was drafted by the Lakers, he obviously couldn't have 33 (it was Kareem's number and was retired). He wanted 24, but another player was already #24 so he chose #8.
He has said the switch to 24 signified the start of the second half of his career.

it was his original high school number and he decided to go back to it everone says 33 was his original but that number, he used it during 11th and 12th grade 9th and 10th he used 24 ans since 33 was retired in the lakers number 8 number 8 came to play came into play because he had a a huge number like 134 so 1+3+4= 8 but now he decided to bring out his number 24

He hasn't talked much about it, but supposedly he wore #24 in high school, and the number wasn't available when he first got to the Lakers.
