It depends. If it was a friend who had started to tell me a problem then said, "never mind", I would gently probe out of concern. If it is someone else, I would pay attention to the "never mind".

depends who is saying it, over what they are saying it about. sometimes "never mind" is a cry for someone to ask more, and sometimes it is just what it is.
