I think the number one cause of crime is substance abuse. Then we can on from there, like sociology, neurology, psychology, trauma, and pure accident.

many causes, but basically when your an adult, you have no excuse.
criminals who are repeat offenders are usually sociopathic. 1 out of every 10 people is a sociopath. (Sociology 101) even in the general population. they are good at mimicking emotions, but they don't really feel anything for anyone, accept what fits their own idea of what they want and how they will get it. they get their targets, and use them. they use others. sometimes many will settle down with a family, and most will not be doomed to commit crimes.
the other root causes are way too broad. there are many reasons.

There are three, closely related -- greed, fear and hatred.
Many crimes are committed out of greed, because someone wants something another person has. In most cases, the greed is motivated by fear of not having enough yourself. In some cases, it's motivated out of a desire to hurt someone else (hatred).
Most of the remaining crimes are to impose power over another. A few of these are solely motivated by fear -- fear of losing, fear of others controlling you, fear of whatever. Most, however, are just based on either not caring what happens to others, or actively wanting to hurt them.
Sadly, that also means that until we can teach people to think rationally, and to make choices based on emotions other than fear and hatred, crime will always be a factor.

There is not one root cause. You are over-simplifying.

Most would think it is poverty, when in all actuality it is not at all. It has a lot to do with parents and the upbringing of children.

There are several but if I had to pick one it would be poverty, with fear of poverty and mental illness closely following.
