No - I don't think society has any idea of the value of elderly people, but I do. I grew up in a mobile home park, where 95% of the population was people over the age of 65. Even though I was a teenager, I quickly realized what an opportunity I had by living there with my parents. I had access to an entire library of living books, people who had been there when the events of history were happening. Most kids my age back then were nice to the elderly, but didn't pay them much attention - these days most kids look at the elderly as just another opportunity to steal something valuable.
The elderly are more than just people who have lived longer than we have - they are our memory, our morality (something we lose more of every year), and our history.

Society does not value our elderly. I definitely do value and respect our elderly, and so does my daughter (she is a teen). The two things that upset her the most is when someone mistreats or disrespects the elderly or animals.
This respect must show through because her and I both seem to attract elderly people. We will always stop and talk to them or just smile and say, "Hello". My daughter dresses in a rocker/goth sort of way. She wears all black, the leather collars and leather wristbands. Most people look at her like she is a freak, but the elderly people will still always talk to her. She likes that they don't judge her by how she looks.
I'm glad she feels this way because I will be getting old someday, and I don't want to be a lonely old lady stuck in a retirement home.

I'm thinking that society doesn't, which is ironic since all us babyboomers are getting there!
I LOVE the elderly! I worked in nursing homes through college and learned that they have a lot of wisdom. ALSO, I work at a veteran's hospital and there are many old men there. They are a joy! They are so polite and respectful and have so much character. They appreciate smiles and they think you're pretty when you smile at them. I go out of my way to make small talk with elderly people.

Society truly does not value the elderly. They are a "burden". They are a nuisance on the road, they're always so needy for help, etc., and they are dumb. This is how we treat them. The fact is, one day, most of us will be elderly, we just can't help it. Hopefully our children, who we raised to be caring individuals, won't throw us away or look at us with impatience and disdain. Morally reprehensible.

No! The majority don't give them a second thought or sometimes don't even think about them at all! They deserve much better from society or their families! I wish I had seen everything that they had, especially since the world has changed so much in the last century! At some point, we will lose all of that and it's sad!

As a society, it is clear that (in the U.S.A.) we do not. We do not revere their wisdom. We do not respect them as the wonderful teachers they can be.
I do value the elderly, and I try to show them the respect they deserve.

I work in a Senior Citizen Nutrition Center, and I see how great the elderly are...they have great stories, advice, jokes! They are alot of fun to be around. I have senior volunteers, that are over 80 and still going strong, it makes me proud to know them.

I VALUE OUR ELDERLY, BUT AS A SOCIETY, I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S THE CASE WITH SOCIETY.
GENERALLY, SOCIETY IS AND ALWAYS HAS TAKEN ONE ANOTHER FOR GRANTED.
