From experience, the wild red fox would take off running at the sight of a human or the sound of the door opening but I would see to it that there was a warm place for him to retreat to.....I'd
fix it so he could get into the shelter in my back yard full of soft warm hay....

No. They live in the wild, and can take care of themselves. If it can't, then something is wrong with it. (i.e. sick, maybe rabid.)
