nope ..... escalate means increase ( go up) ... however spread is a totaly diffrent word ... which means to give away .. or to draw, stretch, or open out.

It CAN be....if used properly in a sentence....."spread" meaning "growing outward" "expand(ing)" "widen(ing)" (see thesauras link)....not "spread" like "butter or topping"....
