Its very "offensive"? I think the reason is the same reason people get Africans mixed up or Europeans mixed up, etc. In America there simply isn't enough Asians to be able to get an eye to spot ethnic differences. Combine that with the fact that humans are 99.9% (or more) identical genetically and that Europe and Asia have the most homogeneous of all the gene pools then you would see why this is hard for many people. You have to see many people of an ethnicity (and know that ethnicity to be what they are) before you start recognizing them from other's of their race.

First of all, I think you mean "offensive."
Second, for some people it might be difficult to tell apart groups of races that have very similar features. Asians are not the only one who fall into the "mixed up" category....the same is done with with nearly every race. I am Bolivian but when people hear that I am Hispanic, they assume either Puerto Rican or Mexican. I look white, so people have assumed I am Irish and/or German (truth be told, I am part Irish part Bolivian). A friend of my husband's is Romanian, people have assumed he is Polish. People aren't trying to offend others, but when similarities run close, mixups are bound to occur.

Why do people get "defensive" and "offensive" mixed up? (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
People just don't know the difference. It also doesn't help when films like "Memoirs of a Geisha" cast Chinese stars to play Japanese characters.

Some times its hard for people to tell where someone is from by looking at them. It happens to all races. I have spent time in korea and japan so i can tell differences in those races, so i think it just depends on exposures to different races. Those with less exposure tend to not be able to tell where someone is from.

I'd say that the vast majority of people don't mean too and mean no offense. the only reason many of us do is because, especially in the melting pot of culture here in America, we can't tell the difference between the appearences or surnames of Asian people.

you mean "offencive". I bet you'd get German and Dutch people mixed up...or Polish and Russian people mixed up....what about Ugandans and Kenyans? Just because you see the differences in your own race, doesn't mean it's as obvious to others.
