Republicans are in favor of smaller government, with less intervention in your life. That means that many social programs get cut or must rely on their communities to fund them. Socially they are more prohibitive. They see a smaller government as a less intrusive, more efficient government.

Democrats favor funding more projects like healthcare, assistance to unemployed and underemployed, disabled, more equality in education, and social security. Socially they promote more freedoms. They see a larger government as one that promotes a more equal society.

Republicans stand for less government control (although tell that to the current administration) and less taxes (for the rich). The Democrats support government programs to help those in need (meaning more taxes) and used to stand up for the middle class (they seem to be a bit lost on that subject these days though). Republicans are very, very religious and oppose everything gay (but usually turn out to be gay). Democrats love a good party (and tend to be alcoholics). The most important thing to know is that in the long run... both parties truly try to do what is in the best interest of our country. We all have our faults, but we all believe that there is no better country in the world than right here in the U.S. It's all about balance and respecting other opinions and defending our rights to be different.

A funny thing is that the definitions are reversed. Republican; Representative governance. Democrat; Self governance.

If it were possible to vote on every issue, would you. No decision gets made in our government until every voter has voted and been counted.

Now the Republicans are for representation by elected officials who are accountable to the people. This would be interpreted as bigger government. However, they battle to limit the government's authority to maintain as much personal freedom as possible. ie., lower taxes, trim spending to infrastructure and defense.

Meanwhile the Democrats are for more personal freedom from responsibility. If that man has lots more money than this guy, since there are many more voters with less money, they claim to be the party of the working man and present their opponents as the party of the rich guy to win the majority of votes. The problem for them is that more and more people are beginning to see there aren't enough rich guys to pay everything the Democrats want to spend, so they wind up coming to you for your 'fair share.' With this, they build programs to help poor people, guarantee everybody a retirement fund, now they want to guarantee you health care. But what happens to a perfectly good service when the bureaucrats control it? It costs more, lots more, and the service is worse. Sure its cheap, if you consider pre-paid by tax dollars cheap. But when the taxes go from 25% to 50% to cover the programs they want to initiate, still people will fall for the rhetoric. I've seen it in England, and it ain't perty in their health care system. Imagine waiting 6 months to see a doctor about your viral infection. If you survive the infection, you might keep your appointment just in case you need to be there for something else, because you've already recovered from the Bird Flu or whatever it was.

In a nutshell, the Republicans favor the economy being unregulated, or minimally regulated.

The Democrats realize that the economy if its unregulated devolves into monopolies and eventually only a few families control all the wealth and everybody else is poor, like in most Latin American countries where the top 1 % has 99 % of the wealth and the other 99% of the population lives in poverty.

Leaving the economy unregulated is a simple and appealing idea, but it does not work in reality.

Notwithstanding all the various issues and groups both parties support or favor, democrats (liberals) generally favor more individual liberties and rights and regulating those large institutions that hinder the individual; republicans (conservatives) generally favor large corporations as a means of building progress and wealth in this country, and keeping the individual under control for their own good.

Liberals tend to think "man" is basically good (Rousseau), while conservatives tend to think "man" is basically bad or evil (Hobbes)

Now that's philosophy. Issues, political parties and groups all change those basic philosophies. But scratch a liberal and you will find they basically feel people are good, while conservatives feel people must be controlled or they will be bad. People who are moderate liberals or moderate conservatives tend to have mixed opinons.

Core Republican Philosophy: The wicked MUST be punished.

Core Democrat Philosophy: Everyone is responsible for everyone else.

Think about these as you look at various planks in the parties' respective platforms. From the environment, to the economy, to wellfare, to crime and punishment, to abortion, to gay rights, all the way to the War on Terror, I think those principles hold true.

It kinda switches back and forth every 100 years or so, but today Republicans support an economic theory called trickle down economics in which they believe that as more dollars go to the rich & to business, dollars will trickle down to the lower economic classes and so every one benefits.

Democrats tend to trust that government can get funds to lower classes faster than trickle down by directing funds directly from govt.

Otherwise both parties want power and support their friends if they get support from their friends

Good question - all I see is negative campaigning with each side accusing the other of the same things. Generally, I think repubs are for lower taxes and smaller govt.
