Do you think these days too many people are looking to be "diagnosed" with something instead of taking responsibility for themselves?
Having will-power, or just admitting that they are not doing things as well as they could?
I don't really want to give examples because I know people will just yell THESE ARE REAL DISORDERS. But here goes:
a child is hyper and won't follow rules at school - the parents, instead of disciplining them think it must be something like ADD or a learning disorder.
a person loves eating and thinks they must have binge-overeating disorder/sugar addiction
my fave: a person is feeling down and concludes that they must "have depression"
What's so wrong with just saying "i feel.." or "i spend too much time.." This is just one of my faults or what i'm giving into just now?
Why does there need to be a dramatic reason or excuse for why people act the way they do? Like it's out of their control?

These days I don't really see anyone just admitting they're being lazy or greedy etc.
Also, new, questionable "conditions" are being announced all the time. Does anyone think so? And although this was wrong and looked like a rant (sorry!) please do tell me your opinion on the matter and if you think any conditions are commonly exaggerated. thanks

yeah elle. Clearly that's what I think.
Can I just ask, what is the name for the condition when someone reads something but doesn't understand it or ignores half of it and then proceeds to lecture someone with their emotionally fueled rant ???

monkey if you see any of my posts around (i actually recognise your name) you might see that I have depression myself. So maybe people should stop assuming..
That's why it's my fav.
Things that don't even follow the symptoms. They exaggerate to the doctors too, don't you know it. It takes nothing more than reading up on the condition online and saying that to the doc to get a diagnosis.
One of the reasons it bothers me is because I KNOW there are real conditions but I feel they're being cheapened by everyone pretending they have 40 different disorders.
I'm quite aware all those conditions exist and that everyones experience of them is different, I didn't mention any of the disorders I felt were made up. I know my post wasn't written perfectly (no learning disorder I'm just really tired and should be asleep) but please READ it properly if you're going to respond.

These days everyone wants to be the victim of something it seems.
Nothing is their fault, it's someone else's.
People have forgotten how to take responsibility for their own actions.
I think it's because people have become so self-centered, they want attention all the time.
This is one reason I have become a misanthrope.

So, are you saying that eating disorders and ADD don't exist? Obviously, you've never worked with a child with ADD or known a person who binge eats. Obviously, you haven't read the millions of reports and studies proving there are correlations between certain brain chemicals and corresponding behaviors. People who create medications do so after exhaustive studies of brain chemicals and hormones and the FDA approves only those drugs which are proven to address the problem. People die from eating disorders and depression.
While I agree that some issues can be addressed by self control, can they all? Ask Richard Carpenter. Maybe you are too young to remember Karen Carpenter but, I do. She died from anorexia, as many young women have. I know children who have committed suicide because they couldn't sit still, sleep, or relax enough to be accepted in society.
For years, I have known mental illnesses are the least accepted of the human disorders but, I had hoped that, with all the research and scientific evidence available to finally put a name to what happens to mental health patients, people would be more willing and able to have compassion for people whose lives are often times a living hell.
I guess I was wrong.

A child should not be on meds until after complete medical and psychological testing.
A person who overeats does not always have a disorder, but there are disorders that cause overeating.
A person who just thinks they are depressed cannot be diagnosed without a psychiatrist.
I don't know anyone who says they have any of these disorders without being diagnosed. If you do, maybe you should find out the truth if you want.
Act like you are thinking of therapy or something and ask them who their doctor is for whatever they are saying they have. OR ask them what pills the doctor gave them for their "disorder."
People can't really claim to have disorders and be credible about it without being properly diagnosed.
Yes, these are real disorders, but not as many people have them that think they do.

I have to agree with you, BUT also say that there are real psychological disorders like the ones you mentioned. However, they must be diagnosed by a mental health professional. But yes, people have leatrned to use external control psychology to blame everything except themselves for their behaviour. The fact is that we choose our thoughts, beliefs and actions, and we cannot really blame someone else for our misery. We are responsible for ourselves. Look into the books by William Glasser, its about reality therapy, a psychology approach that aims to help people be responsible for themselves and take control of their own decisions.

Welcome to the wonderful world of liberalism... If you cheat on your spouse, not your fault you are a sexaholic. If your azz is to big to fit in a seat you sue the airlines for not catering to you & then McDonalds because they did. Not your fault if you do drugs, drink, rape, kill, steal, it is all just a cheimical imbalance. But not to worry cuz the big drug makers have a pill for it.
Grades in schools are bad because they rate/rank a person & hurt their self esteem. Sports in schools/gym are bad because it creates a group of people called losers & another of winners.
It all starts at home & these days people let kids have rings in their face (just by them a shower curtian for christmas I guess) wear what they want, say what they want, do what they want & then hide it by saying "well at least they are not dealing drugs or doing anything real bad".
Gay is A Ok & pushed on people & now you are a criminal if you oppose it. The fact that minority areas with the same average income of a non minority area, but 10 times the crime rate, is not their fault. We breed wusses these days & in turn they breed bigger wusses.
This way we dont have to do anything because it is not something we can control. So people can just sit back & blame somebody else for the downfalls. The people in washington love us for it, hollywood loves us for it, the church loves us for it, the minority groups love us for it, big buisness loves us for it, talk shows love us for it, with all this love how can it be wrong?

i am glad you were blessed without depression and such, but yeah in these days we are working so much, running around, parties, kids, hubbys and wifes, that we cant stay calm and live freely. it older times the husband worked the plow, the women had babies and sewed, and the children watched the parents and learned. now there are so many things that are going wrong, so many different beliefs, that we sometimes choose to take medicine to balance ourselves. please understand people didn't Want to be this way. its a life style we cant choose.
BTW i don't take medication for my, well, problems. i have been diodosed with depression and high anxiety. i have problems at work because i cant do very much without needing to sit down, and calm myself, my relations suffer so much because people cant relie on me to 'feel right about things'. but i have chosen to not take meds for my condition. but soon i am going to get real help, from my doctor.

people do not want to be held accoutable for their problems and their failures. I went through a phase where I had the attitude of nothing that happened is my fault, its everyone else that misled me, or misguided me, or crapped on me...not a fun way to live at all and I am glad I finally figured that out.
That being said some people do have legitimate issues they cant control.

What a great post. No, there is nothing wrong with you - it is our mollicoddled society. No one believes that anything is his own fault. Parents support that theory with their children, so that the next generation grows up feeling entitled - and believe that they are not responsible for their own actions.
