Indian Summer (and yes it is OK to use that word because it is the actual term for it) - is when there is a stretch of warm weather in the fall, usually occurring after the first frost of the year or small stretch of wintry weather. It can last anywhere from a couple of days to a couple weeks. Though you may not be sunbathing at this time, you most likely don't need a jacket or even a sweater.

When Summer seems to linger, and Winter seems to hold back.
Like at the end of a Summer, it starts getting colder and colder, leaves are falling, it's wet and rainy and windy, it may even go below 0 and snow! - It seems Winter is on it's way or here. But then, you'll get days in between (like today in Toronto) where it +14 and so sunny you need sunglasses and don't even need a jacket. Still the nights and mornings are cold, but the afternoons can play tricks and make it seem like it's still Summer. It'll switch back and forth a few times - days of cold with a day of bright and sunny.

It means the day or days when it gets really warm out. It's coming this Wednesday in Chicago when it's going to be like 70 out.
